Hillian

Settling on a farm outside Bow Island, Hillian discovered a welcoming town where her children could grow up safe, active, and connected.

Hillian Oldenzijl and her husband moved to a farm in Bow Island from Holland 15 years ago.

The two have enjoyed raising their two children in Bow Island, and their 10 year old and 12 year old have participated in many sport activities over the years.

Since we live on a farm, sports is how the children have stayed connected with their friends and other families. I really like raising my family here. My children are able to be independent, so they can walk from school, to the office where I work, and then to the pool. It’s very safe,” she says.

Hillian says Bow Island has a lot to offer if people are open to participating in the activities, events, and being a part of the volunteer work in the town. And they are conveniently located between two cities, Medicine Hat and Lethbridge

Hillian is thankful to have a hospital in Bow Island, and it’s a great asset to Bow Island and the surrounding communities. She says it’s something to consider when moving to a town like Bow Island.

Because it’s a small town, everybody chips in with volunteering. It’s a really tight knit community, so the involvement from families and neighbours is big. If someone is new to Bow Island, there are a lot of opportunities to feel a part of the community. I’ve always found people are welcoming,” says Hillian.

The festivals and events that Hillian and her family like to attend are Market in the Park and Harvest Festival. She says the events are for all age categories, from seniors to young families, and adults.

It’s the residents who are hosting the events, so they know what everyone likes and they look at the interest of the whole community.
