Mom Playgroup

From sports and school to playgroups and parades, young families in Bow Island are building strong roots together.

Bow Island has a population of over 2,000 people, and many are young families who know each other and have built friendships over the years. Moms from the Bow Island Playgroup shared four reasons why they love living and raising their families in the rural Alberta town.

1. Activities and Sport Facilities

Terryn says:
There are so many sports facilities that we go to all the time. It’s nice to live somewhere where the kids can stay active through those, and also the events that FCSS provides from playgroups to library programs. It keeps families doing things together, and helps build friendships through parents and kids.

2. A Place for All Children

Kimberly says:
I have older kids, and the school here is very accepting of everyone, from both teachers and students. It’s a really nice environment for teens to grow up in, and it feels safe here. They can have their independence, and we know our neighbours will have our backs and keep an eye out for them. My parents are visiting and the first thing they noticed was how friendly everyone is here.

3. Welcoming and Supportive Atmosphere

Amanda says:
It’s very inclusive here, and there’s a big sense of community. I’m very involved in the community through my work, and when we notice someone is new to the area we invite them to events and playgroups. Children make friends easily with all the group activities happening, and they always want to play with each other. It seems like kids feel more comfortable trying new things, because they’re always with their friends and they have that support system, so it encourages them to do it right away.

4. Annual Festivals & Events

Shayla says:
There are so many young families and community events. It’s nice being in a small town, because you’re always seeing people who know, so the kids always see their friends. We go to events happening in the town, like Market in the Park where local vendors are set up, and the kids love their swimming lessons.
